There a very few places in Sydney Australia where people can train the art of Iaido.
Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei Iaido is one of the weapons classes that are taught at Bujutsu Martial Arts Centre. It is a legitimate art that originates from Japan and is recognised internationally.
Bujutsu is affiliated with the NSW Kendo Association through to the Australian Kendo Renmei through to the International Kendo Federation. Our classes are the real deal.
Please note that we do not allow beginners to use a shinken (live sword/sharp sword). Iaito’s which are a blunt sword are required.
Iaido is a pattern based sword art.
Our Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei Iaido Dan grades are registered in Tokyo, Japan and are internationally recognised grades.
The Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei is the official international organization which exercises general control over and representing Kendo, Iaido and Jodo. It was established by the Japanese government after World War II.
The Australian Kendo Renmei and the NSW Kendo Association are the Australian state and national bodies affiliated with the Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei through the International Kendo Federation.

Our free uniform offer does not apply to our Iaido classes.

You will also need an iaito which is a blunt training sword. It is best to speak to your teacher before you purchase a sword, so that we can work out the appropriate length of iaito you will need. Iaito can also be purchased from the Tozando store.

 There is an additional membership fee of $110 for membership with the NSW Kendo Association that must be paid within 3 weeks of starting your training.

LIST OF GRADING QUESTIONS FOR ALL GRADES SHODAN AND ABOVE

The following questions are produced for the selection by the Iaido Board/Chief Examiner for Dan Grade Examinations. Selection is not limited to these questions and members are advised to study all areas of training requirements and supporting information offered by their Instructors/Sensei. The following questions may be asked at any level but the answer is expected commensurate with the level you are being examined to see if it is appropriate for that level. When possible the examination questions should be issued well prior to the examination date so that students can do adequate research and submit a typed response that will be handed in at the Grading Registration table before commencing the practical examination.
1- State the purpose of learning iaido
2- Describe the relationship of iaido to kendo
3- Give a brief summary of the following terms:
Metsuke
Nuki-tsuke
Kir-tsuke
Chiburi
Noto
Ma-ai
Zanshin
Saya-biki
Sei and do
Reiho
Reigi
4- Discuss conformity of the mind (kokoro) and will power (kiryoku)
5- State the details about posture and movement of the feet in iaido techniques
6- Explain the matter of respiratory control (kokyu)
7- Explain hand-guard (tsuba) control and making the draw (koiguchi no kirigata)
8- Give the name of the Founder of your ryu and the names of the various techniques you have learned
9- List key procedures and warning advice necessary to the safe practise of iaido
10- List the components on the sword and saya diagram provided

Nidan – 2nd Dan

Sandan – 3rd Dan

5 Zen Ken Ren kata. Plus written paper.

Yondan – 4th Dan

5 Zen Ken Ren kata with written paper. Timed: 6 minutes.

Iaido is a traditional martial art that focuses upon learning sword fighting techniques and katas from the samurai era. Real swords are used and there is a heavy emphasis on samurai values.
Kendo is a modern martial art and seen as a sport, where practitioners fight each other with bamboo sticks will wearing protective clothing.

In Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei Iaido, 12 kata’s are trained. 12 may not seem like many, but practitioners are taught to perform those katas at very high level of proficiency which takes many years of training to achieve.
Iaido is about preserving the way of the samurai. Iaido training teaches you to develop inner peace, mental clarity, the ability to focus and discipline. You of course will also learn to master sword drawing and cutting.
Iaido training is a good outlet for those who live stressful and busy lives.
In Zen Nihon Kendo Renmei Iaido, the highest rank is Hachidan (8th Dan).
When a student joins Bujutsu, they start with no rank. They then work their way through the kyu ranks from 6th kyu to 1st kyu, before becoming eligible to test for Shodan (1st Dan).
