JKA Shotokan Karate

Japan Karate Association – Shotokan Karate

Learn how to defend yourself with Shotokan Karate

Bujutsu Martial Arts and Fitness Centre is affiliated with the Japan Karate Association which is the oldest and largest karate association in the world! The Japan Karate Association is widely considered as the world’s leading body on Shotokan Karate.
Through our affiliation with the Japan Karate Association, we are able to offer you internationally recognised grades.
Sensei Mark travels to Tokyo Japan several times a year where he undergoes intense karate training at JKA headquarters.

Many of the techniques taught at Bujutsu Martial Arts and Fitness Centre were developed by Sensei Mark in response to common attacks he observed happening in the community and to attacks he and other police officers were being confronted with on the streets.
Bujutsu and Sensei Mark are members of the NSW Karate Federation and the Australian Karate Federation. In fact, we are the only school in our area who are members of the NSW Karate Federation and the Australian Karate Federation. This means that Bujutsu students have the ability to make the NSW Karate Team and the Australian Karate Team.
You never know when you might be faced with a situation that requires you to defend yourself. We teach our students how to defend themselves against a wide range of kicks, punches, knife and gun attacks. You’ll have the confidence to disarm an attacker. If you’re lucky you will never have to use your self defence skills, but having them could save your life.

A balance between traditional and modern

At Bujutsu Martial Arts and Fitness Centre, we focus on realistic training that can be applied to situations that you might find yourself in when on street. Sensei Mark has been graded by Japanese Sensei to 5th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate. Our classes are Shotokan based, but have an emphasis on reality based self defence.
Karate is a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques such as knife-hands. Grappling locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are also taught.

Increase your fitness

Another benefit of learning karate is the fitness aspect. Karate not only improves your mental ability, but it’s also a great way to increase your fitness level. Our classes contain a good balance between cardiovascular endurance and strength training. You will find yourself getting stronger, becoming more coordinated and flexible.
Kata

There are 27 Kata in the JKA Shotokan System. Video of the kata’s can be found here.

Frequently Asked Question

Karate originated on the island of Okinawa, Japan. Karate’s development was influenced by Chinese martial arts. Gichin Funakoshi Sensei, who is considered the father of modern day karate, took karate from Okinawa to mainland Japan and started teaching karate in schools and universities.
Karate quickly became popular with the Japan Karate Association being born. The Japan Karate Association – is now the oldest and largest karate organisation in the world, and is the style taught at Bujutsu. Think of the Japan Karate Association as the original form of Shotokan Karate.
From mainland Japan, karate has spread around the world with an estimated 100 million practitioners worldwide.
You can start Karate at any age. Our experienced instructors will ensure that no matter your age you will be supervised and provided with age appropriate Karate training.
Bujutsu has classes for children 2 years and up, and we also have members in their 60’s still training with us.
The younger you start training Karate the better, as the sooner your muscle memory will develop. You will also establish flexibility, balance, co-ordination, smooth movement and timing at a younger age.
Sensei Mark trains in Japan several times a year, where it is quite common to see classes full of 50, 60 and even 70 year old’s training Karate.
Prices for karate classes vary from school to school. We regularly do market research in order to ensure we are giving you value for money.
When checking pricing, I recommend you don’t just look at the price. It’s important to examine what are you getting for your money? Are you getting a style that someone has just made up and wants to charge you money for? It seems funny, but sadly, this is what you get in about 90% of martial arts schools in Australia. The systems they teach are their own made-up styles and the grades they award are only recognised in their academy.
The grades offered at Bujutsu are internationally recognised under the Japan Karate Association banner. The Japan Karate Association as well as being the oldest and largest karate organisation in the world, is widely recognised as the gate keeper of tradition and the gold standard of Shotokan karate.
You can find our pricing on our pricing page.

Both Jiu-jitsu and Karate are good forms of martial arts to train. The question should really be, which style is best for you? Jiu-jitsu focuses on grappling, leverage and submissions and is ideal for learning how to control and restrain people. Karate focuses on striking with punches, elbows, knees and kicks.
Both systems that are taught at Bujutsu also teach you self defence skills that can be used in real life situations.
Your goals will determine which style is going to be best for you. If you want to be a well all rounded martial artist, we recommend you train Karate for striking skills and Jiu-Jitsu for grappling skills.

We recommend you train a minimum of 2 days a weeks. 2 days a week allows you to progress your skill level at a steady rate.Karate is easy to learn if you train regularly and stay consistent with your training.
Bujutsu has beginners joining our Karate classes all of the time. Our instructors have a lot of experienced working with beginners and are aware of the needs of beginners.
Our class structure ensures that beginners are given the focus and feedback they need to progress their Karate skills.
However, we do have many members who only train one day a week. If you are going to train one day a week, you just need to be aware that your skill progression and rank progression will be slow.
How long it takes to earn a black belt is dependant on two factors. Firstly, how often you train and secondly, your level of natural talent.
If you train 2 or more times a week, are dedicated to your training and have some natural talent you can earn a black belt in about 3.5 years. If you train 1 day a week, it will normally take you around 6 years.
We always recommend you train at least 2 days a week.
