Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. It focuses on the skill of controlling one’s opponent, gaining a dominant position and using several techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds (Newaza).
Our BJJ classes always look at both the self-defence and sports sides of BJJ.
Bujutsu was affiliated with Team Norton BJJ, founded by Professor Richard Norton, a 6th-degree Black Belt. Professor Norton is the man who brought BJJ to Australia. Richard introduced Chuck Norris to the Machado brothers and played an important role in helping the Machado family establish itself in the BJJ world. Chuck Norris described him as the most all-around martial artist he had ever met. Professor Norton passed in 2025 at the age of 75.
After the passing of Professor Richard Norton, Team Norton BJJ ceased to exist. Sensei Mark also joined Tactical BJJ and the Jiu Jitsu Global Federation, which Rickson Gracie, 8th Degree Coral Belt, heads.
It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the assailant. Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a significant role in training.
The grades awarded at Bujutsu are internationally recognised and in line with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation promotion guidelines.
Stepping into your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class is a welcoming experience at Bujutsu Martial Arts. From the moment you arrive, you will notice an environment built on respect, support and encouragement—qualities that make training both approachable and rewarding at our dojo.
At Bujutsu you can train in BJJ which enjoys the privilege of being part of the Gracie lineage. BJJ classes start with a warm-up to get your body ready for training and improve your flexibility. From there, coaches show how to do things in a clear, step-by-step way, and you will work on your position with a partner and learn how to use timing and leverage instead of strength. Nobody is expected to get it right straight away—progress is about consistency, not perfection.
Sparring (or “rolling”) is introduced gradually, so beginners can learn at their own pace without pressure, and safety is always a priority— coaches and teammates are there to help every step of the way, not hurt. What surprises most newcomers is the sense of community that develops quickly. Everyone remembers being new, so you are never left behind.
Whether you are looking to build fitness, learn self-defence, or challenge yourself in a new way, BJJ offers all that and more, and at Bujutu Martial Arts, you are not just learning a martial art—you are becoming part of a team that wants to see you grow and excel beyond the dojo.

As you learn new skills, your confidence grows naturally. You know in Jiu-Jitsu that you have to work hard to get better, not get better right away. You will always carry this self-confidence everywhere you go and it will help you feel like you can handle things that used to seem overwhelming.

Training demands patience and focus and you learn quickly that improvement requires effort and respect—both for your coaches and your training partners. These values go beyond the dojo and can help you build better habits and healthier relationships. Jiu-Jitsu rewards consistency, which teaches discipline that helps with work, school and everyday challenges.

Jiu-Jitsu helps you become more aware of space, timing, and movement. More importantly, it teaches you real self-defense skills that are based on technique and leverage instead of size or strength. Knowing how to keep yourself safe gives you peace of mind and helps you make calm decisions in your daily life.

There are always challenges in class and that is what will help you grow. Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to stay calm when things get tough, how to learn from your mistakes, and how to come back stronger. This strength goes beyond the mat and helps you face life with more confidence and balance.
