Kid's Martial Arts Programs

Our programs were developed by Sensei Mark, who is one of Australia’s most experienced martial artists and was one of Australia’s highest-ranked police officers, having held the rank of Detective Superintendent – Local Area Commander with the New South Wales Police Force.
Sensei Mark also worked as a Senior Youth Worker for 10 years and has been working with children for over 25 years.

Kids MMA

Kids MMA at Bujutsu focuses on giving kids a safe, structured place to learn real mixed martial arts skills without losing the fun that keeps them coming back. We offer a mix of striking, grappling, movement drills and small moments that may seem small at first but add up quickly to give the little ones confidence and build strength.

We never push kids into the deep end too quickly as from the outside, MMA can look intimidating, but at Bujutsu we break everything down into small and manageable steps, like some footwork here and a basic takedown there, until things start to click. And they always do. You will often see shy kids open up after a few weeks as they begin to move differently, stand a bit taller, and smile more freely. That’s honestly our favourite part of the job.

Kids MMA (Ages 6–13)

Kids between six and thirteen are at that funny stage where they’re growing fast, asking endless questions, and trying to work out how they fit into the world. Our MMA program gives them room to explore all of that through movement, teamwork, and a bit of healthy challenge. The classes mix striking, grappling, defensive positioning, and problem-solving under pressure, but most kids just think of them as "training hard and having a great time."

A quick note for parents, kids must train in at least one other class, like BJJ, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, or Karate, to be able to join the MMA programme. It's not meant to be a hurdle, it's just that MMA is hard to get into without any prior training. If a child doesn't know how to grapple or strike, they won't be able to keep up with drills and sparring. We want them confident, not overwhelmed.

Safety is our number one priority. Kids need the right safety gear, like a head guard, mouth guard, MMA gloves, boxing gloves, leg guards, and for boys, a groin guard and girls can choose a chest guard if they want to be more comfortable.

We do teach the sport side of MMA, but we also teach the tactical skills that are really important for self-defense in real life. Kids learn to stay calm, think clearly, and protect themselves responsibly. Little by little, those lessons spill over into the rest of their life — school, friendships, home — in ways you can’t always predict but definitely feel.

Key Benefits

Benefits of Kids Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

Cardiovascular Fitness

MMA has this way of getting kids moving before they even realise how hard they’re working. The blend of striking, scrambling, and footwork pushes the heart and lungs in a really healthy way. It builds stamina quietly — through games, partner drills, and those “try it one more time” moments that kids usually enjoy more than they admit.

Full-Body Strength & Toning

Because MMA uses both striking and grappling, children end up working muscles they don’t normally use in day-to-day life. Punches and kicks build power, while grappling ties everything together — especially the core. Over time you’ll notice improved strength, posture, and that general athletic “lightness” kids get when their bodies start to coordinate properly.

Coordination & Agility

Kids learn to move with purpose as they figure out how to shift their weight, react to an opponent, and string techniques together without thinking too hard - this builds coordination and balance in a way that feels more like play than training. This training spills over into other areas of life like sports. We have teachers and coaches telling us that they notice the difference too.

Self-Defence Skills

Kids learn useful skills that they can use if they ever need to protect themselves outside of the training session - not reckless techniques but smart, planned ones based on awareness, positioning, and effective responses - it's about staying safe and not being aggressive.

Child Safety First

Anti-Bullying and Child Safety Program

Bujutsu Martial Arts and Fitness Centre does have a formal anti bullying and child safety program that takes a holelistic approach to tackling the problem of bullying.
Our Karate for Toddlers, Kids Karate, Kids Muay Thai Kickboxing and Kids BJJ classes teach children the following:
What bullying is
The effects bullying has on people
It is okay to say no
To use the phrase stop I don't like it
To walk away
To tell a teacher
To tell your parents
To step in when they see a friend being bullied
We encourage parents to talk to their children about what bullying is and what to do if it happens to them
We encourage parents to be good role models
To stay calm and always be polite
Not to be afraid to defend yourself if you have no choice
To only ever use the minimal amount of force necessary to save yourself from harm
To recognise that just because someone is bullying you, you do not have the right to physically harm them
Not to fall victim to peer pressure and get involved in the bullying of others
And of course, how to control and restrain people who attack them
We also teach children simple things like making sure they know mum and dad's mobile phone number
Stranger Danger
What to do if they are being followed home from school
What to do if they are approached by a stranger
Fire Safety issues are also covered, such as what to do if your house is on fire, what to do if your clothes catch on fire
Our martial arts programs are based on my many years of experience as a police officer and martial artist. Our program covers so much more than just how to kick and punch.
