What is Karate?

Combining striking techniques, movement, balance, timing, and discipline, Karate is a traditional Japanese martial arts form that we proudly teach here at Bujutsu Martial Arts.

We start with the basics, since children starting training aren't expected to know any of that, and our trainers focus on how to stand correctly, follow instructions, practise simple movements, remember techniques, and work with a partner. Then doing it all again. It sounds simple, but that's really where good karate training begins.

At Bujutsu, the karate program includes training for different age groups, with classes designed around students' abilities. The centre offers Karate for Toddlers for children aged 2 to 4, and Kids Karate for children aged 3 to 7. Older pupils can advance to more extensive karate and self-defence training.

Karate Denham Court for kids

For young children, karate isn't about turning them into fighters. The goal is to give kids a place to learn. Kids Karate at Bujutsu helps kids develop abilities like coordination, focus, discipline, balance and teamwork while emphasising the principles of karate and self-defence.

A toddler who at first finds it difficult to remain still may eventually improve their listening skills. After enough practice, a kid who struggles with a new movement may eventually master it. It's possible that another child will just feel more at ease entering a room full of strangers…. Confidence comes in many forms, and we see it every day.

 More than kicking and punching

Karate does indeed get kids moving. They focus on strength, fitness, balance, and coordination. But they also learn that progress takes time. After practising a skill once, you don't become an expert.

You put it into practice - You make mistakes - You give it another go.

Then one day it clicks and starts to feel natural. Children can learn a valuable lesson from that process without anyone having to sit down and explain it to them: not everything is easy the first time. Bujutsu's Kids Karate program teaches discipline, focus, teamwork, decision-making, coordination and self-confidence via training.

Karate and self-defence

Self-defence is another important part of martial arts training, but it isn't about encouraging children to look for confrontation. Quite the opposite, as good martial arts training teaches control.

Children learn to understand their movements, listen to instructions and work within boundaries. As they progress, they can develop practical skills that help them feel more capable and aware of their surroundings.

For older students and adults, Bujutsu also offers karate and self-defence training as part of its broader martial arts program.

A place to keep progressing

Another benefit of starting karate when children are young is that there is somewhere to go with it. They don't have to stop once they've learnt the basics.

Bujutsu offers internationally recognised grades, with Sensei Mark having trained with the Japan Karate Association since 1987. JKA grades awarded through Bujutsu are registered with the Japan Karate Association headquarters in Tokyo.
