Shuriken Training at Bujutsu
In New South Wales shuriken are listed as a prohibited weapon.
After a very long wait and a difficult process, Mark Szalajko Sensei has obtained an instructors permit from the New South Wales Police Force – Commissioner of Police, which authorises him to possess and instruct the use of shuriken.
Shuriken can be translated to, sword hidden in the hand. They were popularised by the ninja, but most don’t know that the samurai also used shuriken.
The style of shuriken commonly used by ninja and as seen in many TV shows is the kuruaken shuriken – wheel type and are sometime referred to as throwing stars.
However, the style used by Mark Sensei is the bo shuriken which was favoured by many samurai families.
Shuriken were not used as a killing weapon, they were used by the samurai to distract their enemy so that they could draw their sword enter and cut.
It is also reported that some samurai/ninja coated their shuriken with poison.
Throwing a bo shuriken with power and having the point penetrate the target is very difficult. A significant amount of repetitive training is required to master the shuriken.
