Coach Matt Phythian
BJJ Instructor
After doing some martial arts training as a child, Matt made the effort to turn a passing interest into a passion in 2009 and began training in BJJ. After receiving his Blue Belt he went to train Budo Jitsu Close Quarter Combat under the guidance of Hanshi Rob Gear, eventually earning a Black Belt in the style.
After Rob’s passing, Matt went on to train in kickboxing, submission wrestling, and MMA before taking up a role as instructor, MMA assistant coach, and fight team cornerman at a gym run by Rob’s protege, helping guide one team member to a regional featherweight title in MMA competition.
The closure of that gym and covid saw Matt take a short hiatus from training. Eager to return to the path of martial arts in early 2022, Matt identified Bujutsu as a fantastic dojo to call home and the perfect place to continue his journey of accruing and passing on knowledge of martial arts.
