Improvised Weapons and Self Defence
What is and improvised weapon?
An improvised weapon is an object that was not designed to be used as a weapon but can be put to that use.
Improvised weapons are common every day objects that we can be used to defend ourselves with. Some simple examples include; a pen, a car key, a phone, a ruler, a stapler, a can of food, a hot cup of coffee, salt and pepper shakers, a calculator, etc etc.
Be aware that within the state of NSW Australia it is an offence to be in possession of an item in a public place for self defence purposes.
However, nothing prevents us from using an ordinary day item, like a pen for example to protect ourselves, as long as it is reasonable to do so and proportionate to the attack we are experiencing.
In order to be able to use improvised weapons effectively, we have to train our minds in advance. If we are suddenly threatened or attacked we need to be able to immediately identify items that can be used as an improvised weapon.
Preparation and planing is key.
It would be a really good idea to have a think about the items that are in each room of your home and your workspace in order to identify things that could be used as an improvised weapon.
The use of improvised weapons is taught in our karate/self defence classes and our ladies only self defence classes that are taught at our Smeaton Grange, and Picton locations.
In this video I demonstrate how simple it is to use an improvised weapon such as a pen to defend yourself.
Start training your mind to identify improvised weapons that are around you everyday.
