Bujutsu Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – Team Norton BJJ

(Gracie Lineage)

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting and submission holds. It focuses on the skill of controlling one’s opponent, gaining a dominant position and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds (Newaza).

Our BJJ classes always look at the self defence side as well as the sports side of BJJ.

Bujutsu is affiliated with Team Norton BJJ which was founded by Professor Richard Norton a 6th Degree Black Belt. Professor Norton is the man who brought BJJ to Australia. Richard introduced Chuck Norris to the Machado brothers and played an important role in helping the Machado family to establish themselves in the BJJ world. Chuck Norris described him as the most all rounded martial artist he had ever met. Professor Norton passed in 2025 at the age of 75.

After the passing of Professor Richard Norton, Sensei Mark also joined the Jiu Jitsu Global Federation which is headed by Rickson Gracie 8th Degree Coral Belt.

It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique -most notably by applying joint locks and choke holds to defeat the other person. Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training.
